Making a difference in the battle against hunger!

You're kiddin' me, right?

Although hunger is a very real problem in the lives of over 33,000,000 Americans, most of us probably never realize just how close to empty our neighbor's refrigerator may be. The Foodbank of North Central Arkansas (FBNCA) is a 501(c)3 non-profit charitible organization whose mission is to feed the hungry in a nine county area of North Central Arkansas.

Please understand that the resulting hunger which comes from poverty in America, is quite different than the starvation we see in third world countries. Referred to as food insecurity, hunger in our country is simply defined as not knowing where your next meal will be coming from. Regardless, hunger in any language is no joke!

Of the approximate 33,000,000 Americans suffering from some condition of food insecurity, 14,000,000 of those people are children under the age of 12. The elderly and disabled on fixed incomes largely make up the balance. After monthly living expenses and medical bills, food is the last purchase made with what's left of a very meager income.

What is a food bank?

The simplest way to describe a "Food" bank is by comparing it to a money bank. The major difference between the two being, what is deposited and what is withdrawn - that is, food instead of money. A Foodbank should not be mistaken with your local community food pantry. Even though some local food pantries are mistakenly called "foodbanks", the food pantries are actually much smaller affiliates.

The FBNCA collects, catalogs, warehouses and distributes food to over 40 community based affiliate food pantries and soup kitchens located throughout its 9 county service area. The affiliate organizations in turn, distribute the food at no charge into their respective communities to those suffering from hunger and food insecurity.

In the year 2007, the FBNCA distributed nearly 1 million pounds of food through its partner agencies.

How can I help?

The Foodbank of North Central Arkansas is not a government sponsored program. Instead, it is a faith-based charity, dependent primarily upon the tax-deductible donations, gifts and contributions made by private individuals, foundations, businesses, churches and civic organizations for financial support. Volunteers comprise the majority of the program's workforce.
